MUSIKKEN, LILLESTRØM
Et bygg mellom lokomotivstallen og sporområdet ved Lillestrøm stasjon og samtidig en viktig hjørnestein i plassdannelsen foran stasjonsinngangen syd. Romprogrammet skulle dekke lokaler til den kommunale musikkskolen, en musikkafé og utleielokaler. Bygningen er i tre etasjer som mot lokomotivstallen trapper seg ned til to. Mot stasjonsforplassen er taket trukket ut båret av slanke søyler.
Mot sporet er fasaden i teglstein med lysåpninger i glassbyggestein. Teglen knytter bygningen materialmessig til murverket i lokomotivstallen. Det dominerende arkitekturuttrykket i bygningen er treelementer. Disse spenner fra dekke til dekke og gir fasaden en høyreist karakter. Elementene og glasspartier med forskjellig bredde skaper dybde og rytme med assosiasjoner til musikk. Fasadeuttrykket kan minne om et klaviatur og treelementene med resonanskasser. Alle utvendige trematerialer er i furu. De små øverommene i musikkskolens andre etasje har lysåpninger ved gulv og tak – dette skal gi assosiasjoner til det høye og det lave – viktige begreper både i arkitektur og musikk.

This building between the engine house and the railway yards at Lillestrøm Station also serves as a cornerstone in the creation of a square in front of the station building on the south. The room programme was required to meet the needs of municipal school of music, a music café and accommodations for rent. The building has three floors but these decrease to two in the direction of the engine house. The roof stretches out toward the station square, supported by slim columns. The façade is of brick toward the tracks, with glass brick openings for light. The bricks connect the building materially to the brickwork of the engine house. The dominant architectural expression of the building is comprised of wooden elements. These run from surface to surface and give the façade a towering appearance. The elements and glass portions with varying widths create depth and rhythm, evoking associations to music. The façade expression could trigger thoughts of a keyboard and the wooden elements of resonance boxes. All the external wood is pine – this gives associations to the high and the low – essential concepts of architecture and music.
